FOLD BY LIGHT

‘Fold by light’ makes connections between object, space, narrative and time.

The project was inspired by two sources:  Japanese aesthetics, which are illustrated by an essay ‘In praise of shadows’, written by Junichiro Tanizaki and the traditional Japanese art forms of origami.

‘Fold by light’ is a narrative bound to the four classical elements: water, air, earth, and fire, each of which is implicated in fine-drawn changes in color light on white paper folds. Specifically programmed dynamic lighting subsequently reveals the individual qualities of each element, simultaneously connecting them and creating the sense of passing time.

‘Fold by light’ is the Major Project for MA in Lighting design at Edinburgh Napier University. Supervised by Malcolm Innes, 2014.
